These
three pillars form the framework of the Thai society and
are the basis in which Thailand's socio-economic and political
system have evolved.
A
stone inscription from the Sukhothai period (1238-1350
A.D.) states:
'
Whoever wants to trade in elephants do so;
Whoever wants to trade in silver, in gold do so'.
This
inscription indicates that free enterprise has been part
of Thailand's Philosophy for many generations and is as
prevalent as it is in Europe or North America. Freedom
has always been a pillar among people in lawful pursuit
of their livelihood. Thus a paternalistic form of Government
has developed providing for freedom of action, speech
and enterprise.
